2019 NEEP Summit: Pathways to Decarbonization in the Northeast
in collaboration with EPRI and nESCAUM
This year, the NEEP Summit will be held in collaboration with Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use Management (NESCAUM) and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) as part of EPRI’s Electrification U.S. Symposium Series. "Pathways to Decarbonization in the Northeast" is a partnership between these three organizations to convene an inspiring regional dialogue of government, industry, community and advocacy leaders to address the opportunities, trends, and challenges of minimizing the carbon footprint of homes, buildings, and transportation in the Northeast U.S.
At this two-day conference, we will explore how building decarbonization and electrified transportation have the potential to transform energy use in the Northeast. Co-chaired by Alicia Barton, CEO of New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and Gil C. Quiniones, CEO of the New York Power Authority, the event will bring together an array of policy and regulatory stakeholders, private industry experts, and utility officials to discuss decarbonization, electrification, and the many activities at play in the Northeast energy landscape and how that will impact the future.

Regional Opportunities to Advance Buildings as Grid Assets
B. Technology Innovations for Building Decarbonization (EPRI) Buildings are becoming cornerstones for energy transformation located at the intersection of energy use, data, and energy generation. This session focused on low- and mid-rise residential and office buildings, along with high-rise commercial buildings, to identify new technologies, opportunities, and gaps to address, to further this transformation. This session weaved in the concepts from EPRI's Grid-Ready Energy Analytics Training (GREAT) with Data program to enable training of the future workforce, who are immersed in data analysis, to be able to effectively incorporate these new technologies. The goal of this session was to arm participants with information about opportunities for new technologies for building decarbonization, and to enable an understanding of how the emerging world of data and analytics will impact, and can develop, the workforce of the future. Session Lead: Ram Narayanamurthy, Advanced Buildings Program Manager and Technical Executive, Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)

Breakout Session #4: Making Electrification Real Buildings Getting Buy-in from Consumers, Businesses, and Investors Converting existing homes and buildings to become low-or zero emission requires significant investment. This session explored the health, safety and comfort benefits of such improvements beyond carbon and energy savings, and how to effectively engage consumers and lenders to drive investment at scale. Moderator: Jim Madej, President & CEO, Vermont Energy Investment Corp.
Transportation Driving Electrified Fleets into the Fast Lane Electrifying high-mileage commercial fleets is crucial to achieve large scale emission reductions, long-term business cost savings, and substantial grid benefits. What conditions and public policies need to be in place to accelerate fleet electrification in the Northeast? Leaders in public and private sector fleet electrification shared their experiences and insights on overcoming barriers to mainstreaming clean fleets. Moderator: Ben Mandel, Northeast Regional Director, CALSTART
